Enjoy cooking for your pets?

A great website to visit is balanceit.com
Use this website as a guide to make sure
your pets maintain a well balanced diet.

Newly diagnosed Diabetic Patients:
  1. Make Sure you are using the appropriate syringe for your pet's insulin. (Novolin (NPH) needs a U-100 syringe)
  2. Keep insulin in the fridge.
  3. Keep Karo syrup in the house.
  4. Make sure your pet eats BEFORE each insulin injection. If you pet didn't eat, do NOT give the insulin. Try again to feed at the next scheduled insulin time. If all seems normal at the second feeding attempt, continue with the regular insulin dose.
  5. If all is going well, come into the office for weekly glucose checks 6-7 hours after the morning insulin. For example, if you give the insulin at 6am, come in for glucose check at 12pm or 1pm.
  6. If you are interested in checking your pet's glucose at home, you can order a pet glucometer (Alpha Track 2) from Amazon and bring it with you during the first few glucose checks.
  7. If you pet is acting dazed, drunk, disoriented....it is possible the glucose is low....
    1. Skip the next dose of insulin.
    2. Immediately offer you pet food.
    3. If they refuse food, rub Karo syrup on the gums a few times for the next few hours.
    4. Come in for a glucose check when you can.
    5. If a glucose check is not possible and you pet has started eating and acting normal again, (after the skipped dose) continue with half the insulin dose twice a day until you can come in for a recheck.
    6. If the pet shows sins of low glucose on the half dose schedule, then discontinue insulin and come in for a recheck as soon as you can.
  8. After we find a good insulin dose, we recommend that you come in every 6 months for a spot check of the glucose level 6-7 hours after the morning insulin dose. Weigh your pet at every recheck if possible. If your pet is showing any worsening of clinical signs, please come in sooner for a spot check and bring a urine sample is possible.
